Guinea pigs are tail-less rodents that are native to the west coast of South America. They are often calm and docile, but still make very lively and adorable pets. The three most common breeds of guinea pig are the Smooth-Coated, with short, glossy fur; the Abyssinian, whose hair grows in fluffy tufts all over the body.
When do Guinea pigs squeak?
Guinea pigs are remarkably vocal when excited and will make a variety of sounds when:
- they see their favorite people or
- their treat-jar is opened as they are quite intelligent (they love treats!) or
- in need of some attention.
Guinea pigs make a distinctive wheeking or whistling type sound, often in anticipation of getting a favorite treat or. They love to vocalize with squeals, chirps, squeaks, and whistles.

Guinea pigs live on average around five to seven years, sometimes longer, so be prepared to provide care over the long term.?Guinea pigs are very social animals and will be happiest living with other guinea pigs (and don’t worry, they will still bond with their owners, too).?Keep a same-sex pair to ensure you don’t have any unwanted litters.?A pair of females is your best choice as a pair of males may be prone to fighting (especially if they are not neutered).
Although not known for their intelligence, they do recognize their owners and will seek them out and return affection.?Guinea pigs are cuddly, comical, and clever.
Careful handling is a must, and children should be supervised with them, but they are unlikely to bite even when stressed.
